[Competition drawings for the Lady Chapel of St. Patrick's Cathedral] [graphic] : [preliminary sketches] / [Renwick, Aspinwall & Owen]. 1899-1900.

This set of drawings is clearly the preliminary sketches prior to submission to the Lady Chapel competition. See also the record for the final competition drawings, acession numbers 1000.014.00053-.00060. This set consists of 1 drawing, graphite and ink on paper; 1 drawing, graphite, ink and wash on paper; and 4 drawings, ink on paper. In addition, there is 1drawing, graphite and wash on laid linen tracing paper; 1 drawing, graphite on laid linen tracing paper; 1 drawing, ink with wash and pencil on laid linen tracing paper. The remaining 11 drawings are ink on laid linen tracing paper. Some of the 14 laid linen tracing paper drawings bear the watermark: "Buskirk's Alderney Linen, 6th Ave., 34th & 35th Sts., N.Y.".

Discussions between Cathedral trustees and Renwick about the new Cathedral began in 1853. The final designs for the Cathedral's first scheme were accepted and work began in 1858. Renwick is known to have initially worked in partnership with William Rodrigue, but scholars generally agree that the designs were Renwick's and Rodrigue withdrew from the project in its early stages. A competition was held (circa 1899-1900) requesting submissions for St. Patrick's Lady Chapel. James Renwick's successor firm submitted these drawings anonymously. Charles T. Matthews won the competition and the Lady Chapel was constructed between 1901 and 1906.
